# Shadcn Disabled

> Disabled textarea.

- Type: example, free and open source (MIT)
- Component: [Textarea](https://reui.io/components/textarea.md)
- Page: https://reui.io/components/textarea/c-textarea-5
- Docs (Base UI): https://ui.shadcn.com/docs/components/base/textarea.md
- Docs (Radix UI): https://ui.shadcn.com/docs/components/radix/textarea.md
- MCP: `get_example("c-textarea-5")`
- Registry item: https://reui.io/r/styles/base-nova/c-textarea-5.json
- Uses: Field, Textarea

## Best for

A labeled box locked by the disabled attribute, dimmed to half opacity with a not allowed cursor

## Agent notes

- `Field` carries no data-disabled, so `FieldLabel` stays at full strength beside the dimmed box; give `Field` data-disabled true along with `disabled`
- A `disabled` box is skipped by Tab and left out of form data; switch to readOnly when the text must still submit

## When not to use

- A box the user can still type in, with its name shown above: use [With Label](https://reui.io/components/textarea/c-textarea-3.md) (`get_example("c-textarea-3")`)

## Install

```bash
npx shadcn@latest add @reui/c-textarea-5
```

## About Shadcn Textarea

### When to use

- Messages, feedback and other free text answers that run over several lines
- Labeled long text fields with a hint under the box, an error state or a disabled state
- Profile bios that count characters toward a limit and grow as the user types

### When not to use

- A comment or prompt box with buttons or a live count inside its border: use [Input Group](https://reui.io/components/input-group.md) (`get_component("input-group")`)
- A modal that asks for a note along with reasons to tick, such as a churn survey: use the [Dialog blocks](https://reui.io/blocks/application/dialog.md)
- A complete page of fields, such as a support ticket or a profile edit, saved together: use the [Form blocks](https://reui.io/blocks/application/form.md)

### Agent notes

- `Textarea` grows with its text through `field-sizing-content` with no height cap, and Chromium ignores `rows`; set min-h and max-h classes
- Only `aria-invalid` on `Textarea` turns its border red, in every style; a data-invalid flag on `Field` leaves the border as it was
